Br Giacomo Bini, ofm
Minister General
Dear Br Giacomo,
I call down the blessing of our Seraphic Father on you before going on to inform you of the earthquake of yesterday, 13th February, in El Salvador.
Wound upon wound: tens of thousands of houses, already weakened by the first earthquake, have fallen down; estimates give account of two thousand injured and three hundred dead. This earthquake has affected the families of our friars more than the previous one. Our one consolation is that lives were saved.
Contemplating this poor and small country of El Salvador in these days we spontaneously think of the scene of Jesus falling again and again and our immediate feelings of compassion for and solidarity with the victims are joined by questions of why and who are to blame. There is no lack of voices that, like religious jackals, take advantage to present a picture of a chastising God. But we know who have the principal responsibility and from whom comes the mercy that consoles and revitalises. In the end we fall to our knees and, rejecting all bad feelings, pray for all and we place ourselves in the loving hands of God.
Dear Brother, while we thank you for the generous response of a month ago, we again stretch out our hand, with humility and dignity, on behalf of the new victims.
Receive, Brother, a fraternal and loving greeting from all the friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Br Domingo SolĖs, ofm
Vicar Provincial
