The first earthquake shook Assisi exactly one year ago (26.09.1997). The Economato Generale at the General Curia (Rome) has received various donations from all over the world to help alleviate the sufferings of the people, the friars and the Poor Clares living in the area. As on 10th September 1998 the equivalent of 1.054.000.000 Italian Lire reached our offices. According to instructions from the Minister General and the General Definitorium, these donations are to be distributed as follows:
|
The sum being offered for the people of the region will be passed on to the Economo of the Province of the Marche. This Province will be responsible for ensuring that the funds are used to alleviate the sufferings of those still living in temporary shelters. The Province will provide us with a detailed report at a reasonable time in the future.
In the meantime the Economato Generale also received the sum of 200.000.000 Lit. to be used for other charitable causes. This sum was sent out to Papua New Guinea after the catastrophe which hit the area recently.
