of the English Speaking Conference |
April 30th May 5th, 2000
Within the shadow of St. Peters Basilica, a group of 12 treasurers from the English Speaking Conference came together for their annual meeting. The unique aspect of this experience was that it was being held in Rome and during the year of the Great Jubilee. The participants put together a programme that had them walking the streets of Rome as pilgrims passing through the Jubilee Doors.
![]() Left to right: Fr. Jimmy Zammit (Economo Generale), Fr. John Hooper (Immaculate Conception in Great Britain), Mrs. Judy Brogan (Holy Savior, USA), Fr. John Puodziunas (Assumption, USA, Fr. John Brice (Queen of Peace, Africa), Mrs. Renee Daul (Assumption, USA), Fr. Dennis Wilson (Holy Name, USA Chair of the Treasurers), Mrs. Dorothy Kosak (Holy Savior, USA); Fr. Allan DaCorte (Sacred Heart, USA); Mrs. Lupe Aceves Stenger (Santa Barbara, USA); Mr. Glen Scrivner (Sacred Heart, USA); Fr. Fernand Langlais (St. Joseph, Canada) and Fr. Kenan Freson (St. John the Baptist, USA) For over ten years a formal annual meeting allows them to interrelate as brothers and sisters assisting one another with the issues of their day-to-day life in the finance offices of the various provinces. This time they were able to explore the dimension that makes them members of the greater Franciscan Family by meeting those who serve in the Houses Dependent upon the Minister General in Rome. On behalf of the Minister General and the General Definitorium, Fr. Peter Williams welcomes the participants to Rome and thanks them for their service to their home provinces and to the Order. There is also a bit of time to discuss the good work being done by the friars in Africa, a situation in which Fr. Peter is very active. ![]() On the first day of the meeting, everybody was able to hop on the "Metro" (subway transit system) and head down to the friary that houses the Franciscans at St. John Lateran who celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation with those pilgrims who approach the Lord in this special way. This was the first in a series of meetings that allowed the friars in Rome to share their experiences of service to the Church and to the Order. There was also an opportunity to pass through one of the three Holy Doors officially visited by the treasurers who put aside their numbers for the pilgrims staff. On the second day, Fr. Maurice Carmody acted as the official welcomer for the community at Collegio San Bonaventura in Grottaferrata. Everyone was able to hear about a very special life dedicated to study of Franciscan texts and a very special lived experience shared by friars of both the Franciscan and Dominican families. During the visit, the librarian, Fr. Bogdan Fajdek, introduced us to the important resources of this precious library. ![]()

Tuesday was a day in which we were able to visit the people at the Instituto per le Opere di Religione at the Vatican City. This institute facilitates the financial needs of the central administration of the Church and it also serves religious communities such as our own. There was a presentation that helped us understand the various services available. On Wednesday it was time for a full tour of the Curia Generale. This provided everyone with a chance to meet the friars who serve the Order in many different ways. Many times it is hard to understand what is involved in running a General Curia when there are so many members in the Order. On Thursday the day was spent at via Merulana. The participants were welcomed by the guardian, Fr. Antonio Gonzales and the Economo of the Collegio Internazionale S. Antonio. Fr. Salvador Rangel, the economo, is facing the camera and standing to the left of the guardian. ![]() The morning was dedicated to seeing those sectors touching the life of the friary where both staff and students live: the residential areas, the basilica, the Pie Opere Antoniane (outreach to the poor). The morning allowed us time for a visit to the Library and to the Pontificia Accademia Mariana Internazionale and the Commissio Scotistica. Below, Fr. Cesar Sacco (third from the left) explains the painstaking process by which the work of the Commissione is lovingly carried out. ![]() |
Lunch was shared in the student dining room. This afforded an experience of the international nature of the St. Anthony reality. Here Renee and Judy are speaking with friars from Hungary and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ![]() Later in the afternoon the Rector Magnifico of the Pontificio Ateneo Antonianum, Fr. Marco Nobile, facilitated a meeting between the treasurers, the Deans of the various faculties and a cross-section of students. The exchange opened channels between all the participants in such a way that I am convinced that everybody left the aula feeling enriched. It was a full week for the Treasurers. They had opportunities to visit the Holy Doors at St. Maria Maggiore and San Pietro. There were moments where they got to visit the Castelli Romani area as well as the excavations under St. Peters. There were meals shared and walks through the city. All of these things formed part of the ongoing experience of this group. A few of the members came for the first time and they were taken under the wings of the veterans. Questions are asked and possible answers are given. Everybodys situation is unique in some ways and common in others. Nobody feels that they have all the answers, not even after the meeting. There is certainly a sense that one is less isolated and that some problems are not unique. That becomes encouraging. This group grew out of good ideas, good will and shared commitments. It is something that has been supported by various provincials and the English Speaking Conference. This report has been shared in the hopes that other conferences will be able to borrow this idea, adapting it to their own situations. Good news deserves to be spread. |
