Other Activities of the JPIC Office

  • Animation Committee: The animation committee consists of four friars plus the Director and Assistant-Director of the office. They met on two occasions during 1999. The office organises these meetings and the subsequent follow up afterwards. The first meeting took place in Dublin in May. After the meeting some of the committee visited the North of Ireland and stayed with friars in North Belfast, an area badly affected by violence. They spoke with politicians and church leaders; encouraged a continuation of the peace process, as well as becoming informed of the situation.

    • A second meeting took place in Vossenack, Germany, with the sole objective of organising the International meeting for October 2000. A mini-animation committee meeting took place in Geneva in August to advance planning.

  • JPIC Resource Book: The office worked hard to compile and edit the JPIC Resource-book. The General Definitory asked the JPIC office to publish the book. The office then enlisted the help of the conferences to have it translated into as many languages as possible for it’s distribution via the conferences. It has been published in English through the ESC JPIC commission and in Spanish through the editorial of the Cantabria Province. Presently translations into Italian, French, German, Croatian, and Indonesian are in progress. It is hoped some other language groups will oblige with translations. It will be available on the Internet (in all languages) with a link up to our JPIC web page in the near future.

  • Inter-congregational JPIC commission: The JPIC office participates (when possible) in the monthly meetings of the JPIC promoters of other religious congregations based in Rome. Efforts are made to coordinate work and keep one another informed of what events in the church and the world related to JPIC.

  • A meeting of young simply professed friars from Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Slovakia and Germany met in Brussels to reflect on the new role of the Friars Minor in a United Europe. It was organised by the JPIC commission of the Dutch province and Peter Schorr ofm spoke to the gathering.

  • Guardians’ Meeting: A meeting with Guardians of the Tirolian Province at Hall/Innsbruck on the theme of how to engage friars in justice, peace and integrity of creation work.

  • A conference with young friars of the Tirolian Province (Innsbruck) at Schwaz on JPIC work.

  • Contact with new Provincials and Visitators during their annual meeting at the General Curia. A series of useful questions may help ascertain the quality of the Franciscan JPIC dimension of Provincial life and ministries.

  • Letter Campaigns: the office supported several requests for solidarity with persons and groups whose Human Rights were being violated. Through the office the JPIC commissions of the order were informed and invited to participate in several of these campaigns.

  • Human Rights Commission meeting: the JPIC Rome office was present during some of the Human Rights commission meeting in Geneva. Friars were encouraged to be present, especially from countries whose Human Rights record were being highlighted by Franciscans International.
