    Communications

  • In less than two years we have visited 11 of 15 conferences. We are in constant communication with all 15-conference coordinators especially through "Contact", the office publication of the JPIC International Council. Contact is published bi-monthly in Spanish, Italian and English. The brothers communicate with one another through this publication. It communicates happenings of JPIC in the Order. Up to date information on JPIC related issues are published on the Curia web page (www.ofm.org). Regular contributions are made to "Fraternitas" and to "Pax et Bonum". The friars are encouraged to contribute to their own provincial publications as well as those of the Order.

    Inter-Franciscan JPIC Commission:

Our office coordinates the Inter-Franciscan JPIC commission based in Rome. The commission met four times in 1999. As well as keeping members informed of JPIC work within the branches of the Family a number of projects are underway to strengthen co-operation. One of the principal projects is a Franciscan Urgent Action Network. It will respond to abuses against Human rights. A Franciscan must recommend the appeal. No more than one appeal per month will be make and the identity of the members of the network will be kept confidential. The possibilities exist to build a network of several thousand Franciscans and friends of St. Francis prepared to work for justice and against Human Rights violations in a very simple and yet concrete way.

OFM Urgent Actions: From time to time the JPIC office in Rome receives requests to publicise abuses to human rights and seek International support for victims. We decided to draw up two types of responses:

Urgent action A: This is an appeal launched from the Rome office and seeks the support of all of the friars of the Order. A recent example was an appeal for Friar Rodrigo Amédée Péret after an attempt was make on his life in November 1998. Several thousand letters were sent to the Brazilian Government asking for justice and highlighting international awareness of the threat to one of our brothers.

Urgent action B: This is an appeal directed to our JPIC commissions and friars who have expressed an interest in being included on our urgent action list. These actions are more frequent.
