  • Report 2000 - Section 9

Some Limitations to JPIC Work in the Order:

    • Some JPIC provincial coordinators are working alone without the backup of a commission, sometimes with no orientation from the Provincial Government and with little or no moral or economic support.
    • Lack of clarity between the role of an activist and a JPIC animator.
    • Weak organisational skills among some JPIC animators: organisation of meetings, co-ordination, pursuit of goals and objectives and lack of creativity in incorporating JPIC into fraternal life and existing ministries.
    • Some JPIC animators stop trying to do their job due to frustration, negative responses and indifference of the friars. Some prefer to work with like minded socially committed people and organisations.
    • Insufficient attention given by authorities at most levels of the Order to aspects of Scripture, theology, spirituality, the General Constitutions and Franciscan documents related to the social dimension of the Christian commitment.
    • Lack of ability by some JPIC coordinators to handle frustration and a desire to experience immediate results, rather that prepare the ground for greater receptivity in the future.

We believe there is a positive development in consciousness of the importance of JPIC values in the Order and recognition of their centrality to our lives and ministries. Our openness to the Spirit will make the signs of the times clearer, and at the same time present us with many difficult and challenging options. Work for peace cannot be separated from work for justice and the defense and promotion of the environment. With more than forty wars raging in the world we have an imperative to work for peace and to support like minded people. We can bring a spirit, the spirit of our founder Saint Francis, to animate many initiatives for peace and justice in our countries. Let us make our own the conviction of Pope John Paul II who says:

"In the face of persisting evidence of war, and countless grievous defeats of life, Christ, the Conqueror of sin and death, urges us not to surrender. Peace is possible, peace is a duty, peace is a prime responsibility of everyone."
