TODAY CARDINAL EDUARDO PIRONIO DIED IN ROME. He was
Pontifical Delegate for the Order of Friars Minor at General Chapter in May
1997.

Cardinal Pironio was born in Nueve de Julio, Argentina, on December 3, 1920; ordained to the priesthood on December 5,
1943; elected to the titular Church of Ceciri on March 24, 1964; consecrated
May 31, 1964; transferred to Mar de la Plata, Argentina, on the April 19,
1972; promoted to Archbishop of the titular church of Tiges on September 20,
1975; he was named a Cardinal and received his red hat from the hands of Paul VI at the Concistory
held on May 24, 1976; named Deacon of Saints Cosmos and Damian; Prefect of the
Sacred Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes (May 29, 1976); and
President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (April 5, 1984).
He was the youngest child of many in a poor and family of Italian descent. After
studying Philosophy and Theology of San Jose de la Plata he moved to Rome
where he obtained his Doctorate at the Pontifical Atheneum Angelicum. He returned
to Argentina and was ordained to the priesthood in the Basilica of Nuestra Seöora de
Luj½n.

1976 da Paolo VI; Prefetto della Sacra Congregazione per i Religiosi e gli
Istituti Secolari (29 maggio 1976); Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per
i Laici (5 aprile 1984).
Ultimo figlio di una famiglia di origine italiana, numerosa e di modeste
condizioni. Dopo gli studi filosofici e teologici compiuti nel seminario
San José de La Plata, si trasferì a Roma dove conseguì
il Dottorato nel Pontificio Ateneo Angelicum. Rientrato in Argentina, fu
ordinato sacerdote nella basilica di Nostra Signora di Luján.

El hijo más pequeño de una familia numerosa y de modestas
condiciones, de
origen italiana. Terminados los estudios filosóficos y
teológicos en el
seminario San José de la Plata, fue enviado a Roma donde se
doctoró en el
Pontificio Ateneo Angelicum. Vuelto a Argentina, fue ordenado sacerdote en
la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Luján.
