Little Brothers Meet in Belgium

Little Brothers Meet in Belgium

The third meeting of European friars who belong to small fraternities living amongst the poor, was held over Pentecost Weekend, 29th: May 1 st June. Twenty-eight friars from ten OFM provinces, made up of seven nationalities, met in Liege (Province of the Three Companions).

The main purpose of the meeting was to offer support and encouragement, and to share our experience with one another. We are fraternities outside the, usual structures of our Order and the institutional Church, living on the margins of society, and, in some cases, on the margins of our Provinces.

Our time together highlighted the importance of contemplative living, a simple lifestyle and the quality of our relationships. We deepened our awareness of the benefits for us, as friars minor, to be exposed to the real suffering and joys of those who are poor. As brothers, we shared basic- accommodation and served one another by preparing meals and sharing prayer together. Meeting like this sustains our hope and vision of fraternities of little brothers living amongst those who are poor.

We have decided to try to make our meeting a regular Pentecost event and will come together next year from 21st May-24th May. Our theme will be: "Lessons learnt from living in small communities among the poor."
