GUINEA BISSAU ; Mgr. Settimio Atruro Ferrazzetta, ofm, Bishop of Bissau, was forced to leave his diocese because of an accident which resulted in a fractured femur. Doctors had advised Mgr. Ferrazzetta to return to Italy, but he insisted on being transferred instead to a hospital in Dakar (Senegal). "Because of the tense situation at present being experienced by Guinea Bissau", he said, "and especially by my own people, I have asked the doctors for permission to stay in Africa, where I hope to recover as soon as possible". According to first reports, Mgr. Ferrazzetta had the accident as he climbed the stairs of his apartment. The 74-year old bishop was determined if at all possible not to leave Africa because of the delicate stage of the peace process in Guinea Bissau, of which the Franciscan bishop and native of Venice is an ardent promoter. 18.11.98 He was due to be operated on in Dakar on November 17, but we learn from the missionary agency MISNA (www.misna.org) that the operation is now due to take place in Verona, Italy. His medical advisers have persuaded Mgr. Ferrazzetti to return to Italy because of the inadequate facilities of the hospital in senegal. It is expected that Bishop Ferrazzetta will be in hospital for three weeks.

MONS. FERRAZZETTA OFM COSTRETTO A LASCIARE BISSAU

GUINEA BISSAU - Mons. Settimio Arturo Ferrazzetta, ofm, vescovo di Bissau, è stato costretto a lasciare la sua sede episcopale a causa di un incidente che gli ha causato la frattura del femore. I medici avevano suggerito al prelato di rientrare in Italia, il vescovo ha però preferito essere trasferito in un ospedale di Dakar (Senegal). "Tenendo conto - ha detto - del delicato momento che sta vivendo la Guinea Bissau e la mia gente in particolare, ho chiesto ai dottori il permesso di rimanere in Africa e spero di guarire prima possibile." Questa mattina, 17 novembre, Mons. Ferrazzetta, ofm, dovrebbe essere operato a Dakar. Secondo le prime informazioni, l'incidente sarebbe avvenuto mentre il Vescovo saliva le scale nel suo appartamento. Il 74enne prelato ha rifiutato il ricovero in Italia, come prospettato dai suoi collaboratori, per non allontanarsi dalla Guinea Bissau. Il Paese è infatti impegnato in una delicata fase del processo di pace di cui, il vescovo francescano di origine venete, e' tra i più tenaci promotori. 18.11.98 SENEGAL - Apprendiamo dall'agenzia missionaria MISNA (www.misna.org) che mons. Settimio Ferrazzetta ofm, vescovo di Bissau, sarà operato a Verona, in Italia. I medici dell'ospedale di Dakar hanno convinto il presule ad affidarsi ai chirurghi italiani per l'operazione al femore, in quanto l'ospedale senegalese non è sufficientemente attrezzato per tali interventi. Si prevede un ricovero di tre settimane.

El prelado, de 74 años de edad, no ha querido ser operado en Italia, como deseaban sus colaboradores, para permanecer lo más cerca posible de Guinea Bissau, donde se está llevando a cabo un delicado proceso de paz del que es uno de los principales promotores. 18.11.98 SENEGAL. Der 74-jährige wollte nicht in ein italienisches Krankenhaus eingeliefert werden, wie es von seinen Mitarbeitern vorgesehen war, um sich nicht von Guinea-Bissau entfernen zu müssen. Das Land befindet sich in der Tat in einer schwierigen Phase des Friedensprozesses, zu dessen eifrigsten Förderern der Franziskanerbischof aus dem Veneto zählt. 18.11.98 SENEGAL: Von der Missionsagentur MISNA (www.misna.org) kommt die Nachricht, daß Mons. Settimio Ferrazzetta nun doch in Verona operiert werden soll. Die Ärzte des Krankenhauses in Dakar haben den Bischof überzeugt, sich für die Oberschenkel-Operation den italienischen Chirurgen anzuvertrauen, da das Krankenhaus im Senegal für derartige Eingriffe nicht entsprechend ausgestattet ist. Man geht von einem Krankenhaus-Aufenthalt von etwa drei Wochen aus.
