    muttathupadathu

Sister Alphonsa was born on August 19, 1910 in the parish of Kudamalur, near Kottayam, of parents Joseph and Mariam Muttathupadam. She lost her mother on her birth and was brought up and educated by her maternal aunt and her grand uncle Rev. Fr. Joseph Muttathupadam. She joined the Poor Clares at Bharnanganam, put on the veil on 12 August 1928, received the habit on 19th May 1930, and was professed on 1th August 1936. Hers Was a life of suffering, confined practically to bed till death. A victim of love-she offered hersef to Jesus carefully governing every detail of her life by His sweet pleasure. Her surrender to God's will was complete, simple and joyous like a child, the smile of innocence never parted from her lips. Her cheerfulness she maintained to the end, passing away in a paroxysm of pain, on July 28, 1946, in the odour of Sanctity. Innumerable favours are attributed to her intercession, and thousands of pilgrims flock to her tomb at Bharnanganam in the Diocese of Palai South India. His Holiness Pope John Paul II, during his apostolic visit to India, beatified Sr. Alphonsa on 8th. February 1986.
