UFME - EUROPEAN UNION OF FRIARS MINOR

    The Journey of UFME

    The Permanent UFME Council on:
    European presence, Communication, Youth
    Rome, 30 October 1999

The Rome gathering of the Permanent Council of the UFME of October 30, 1999 had a particular task which it obliged itself to accomplish. This was proceeded by a consultation of the European Conferences of Friar Minors and recording the wishes of the European Definitor Generals. The Conferences and the Definitor Generals were invited to pass approval upon the initial directives of the Permanent Council and conclude a long discussion concerning goals and methodology of direction of UFME in Europe.

The approval came synthesized as such: "the proposals of UFME, as a primary goal, primarly concern the animation of the friars as to European Problems, such as in contact between the institutions of Europe, both religious and civil; the constitution of a European Community should mature, eventually, into a second development; it will begin to be first constituted as a group of studies and works, composed from persons chosen from those names presented by the Conferences. The task of the working groups will be to embrace the various issues that are already operating internal to the Conferences in the sectors which they wish to further develop."

Some of the Conferences have implemented already their understandings, substantially in agreement with the orientation as has been proposed by the Permanent Council. In the joint session of the Permanent Council with The European Definitors various problems were analyzed, difficulties and possibilities, underlining the importance of bringing into adhesion and service all of the points already successfully working internal to the various entities of The Order in Europe; it was also noted the usefulness and the opportunities experienced in bilateral contact between entities of the various Conferences, above and beyond initiatives and conferences more general in nature. The obvious difficulties that emerge involve the individual work demands on the person and the scarcity of information.

    A Study Group

The last point will be the constitution of a study group, that will work after the example and in collaboration with members of other similar study groups which are working successfully on the European scene already among Dominicans and Jesuits. The study group will be invited to collaborate with the Permanent Council to tailor and construct the style in the animation of the European friars, serving to unify and bring to reality the already operating situations within The Order, and to institute direct contact with the European institutions, ecclesial and religious with civil.

    Information via Internet

To potentialize the information which involves only the European Friars as opposed to the rest of the world, beginning in the month of January 2000, a space reserved for the notices of the UFME will be inserted into the curia general internet site. The information will be organized involving the 4 titles that have been delineated. Every notice will remain available on the internet page for one month. The title Journey of the UFME, will involved the work of the Permanent Council and the general events of The UFME; the title Franciscans and Europe will inform us of the rapport of the Franciscans and various European institutions and of European events that are possibly of interest to the friars; the title On Conferences will bring to consciousness all of the experiences more significant that come along in the arena of Conference presentations; the title Young Friars will publish information on projects involving young friars.

For those who have difficulty in obtaining notices via the internet, they would be able to ask the secretary for printed copy.

    Young Group

There were positive results as to the inclusion of the youth in the animation and programming of UFME, as to article 1.4 of the UFME statutes which involve the gathering in Fiesole (Florence) for November 11, 1999 under the authorship of animation of the young friars of the Conference; revolving about this inclusion of this group, there were new proposal contributions, both creative and inclusive of new energy.

Next meeting of the Permanent Council

The Permanent Council will meet from 21 to 24 January 2000. It will look at the way and the instrumentation of giving body and concrete methodology to the work of peace and reconciliation, for communicative dialogue and for respect of creation. A member of the group of Dominican Friars will be a participant will be a resource in this research.
