The work of the General Chapter of the Friars Minor, which is being held during these days at St. Mary of the Angels (Assisi), was taken up again today. After the Sunday rest, which was marked by a pilgrimage by the Chapter Members to the Franciscan sanctuaries of the Rieti Valley (pictures),, the Assembly began the new week of evaluation and planning of the path of the Order.

The day’s work began with a presentation by the Procurator General, Br. Antonio Riccio, who presented the work carried out by this office during the last six years, offering assessments and suggestions for the next six-year period. The topics were numerous, given that the Procurator’s Office, in the name of the Minister General, deals with matters of the Order carried out at the Holy See. The Procurator called to mind how precious the close collaboration was during the siege of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem in April 2002.

A discussion followed in the Chapter Hall and there were some requests for clarification by the Assembly.

Subsequently, Br. Romain Mailleux, juridical expert, presented the proposals contained in the Instrumentum Laboris for the revision of the General Statutes to the Chapter Members. The Chapter Members dwelt for a while on the topics regarding the revision of the Provinces and Custodies, the composition of the communities and the re-structuring of the Conferences of Ministers Provincial.

The reflection on these topics was then continued in the linguistic groups in the afternoon.

Among the messages that came to the Chapter, we highlight today some passages from that sent by H.E. Card. Carlo Maria Martini for the occasion: “Living here in Jerusalem, I have had the occasion to admire from close by the spirituality of the Friars and their life of dedication and sacrifice in the service of the Holy Places. You have a fundamental recipe for this world, which is that of life according to the Evangelical Beatitudes. Your capacity to express, after the example of St. Francis, the simplicity, fraternity, pardon and joy that come from the Beatitudes is the most important thing that could be done in the service of peace on the part of Christians. I will unite in prayer with all the communities and with all the Friars so that the Lord may grant you the experience of the fire of Pentecost”.

Oggi sono ripresi i lavori del Capitolo generale dei Frati Minori, che si sta svolgendo in questi giorni a S. Maria degli Angeli (Assisi). Dopo la pausa domenicale, caratterizzata da un pellegrinaggio dei Capitolari ai santuari francescani della Valle Reatina (fotografie), l'Assemblea ha dato inizio ad una nuova settimana di verifica e di programmazione del cammino dell'Ordine.

La giornata si è inaugurata con l'intervento del Procuratore generale, fra Antonio Riccio, che ha presentato il servizio svolto da questo Ufficio negli ultimi sei anni, offrendo anche valutazioni e suggerimenti per il prossimo sessennio. Numerosi i temi affrontati, dato che la Procura, a nome del Ministro generale, tratta le pratiche dell'Ordine da svolgersi presso la Santa Sede. Il Procuratore ha ricordato quanto sia stata preziosa questa stretta collaborazione durante l'assedio della Basilica della Natività a Betlemme, nell'aprile del 2002.

A questo intervento ha fatto seguito la discussione in Aula e la richiesta di alcuni chiarimenti da parte dell'Assemblea.

Successivamente fra Romain Mailleux, perito giurista, ha presentato ai Capitolari le proposte contenute nello strumento di lavoro per la revisione degli Statuti generali. Si è soffermato sulle tematiche riguardanti la revisione delle Province e delle Custodie, la composizione delle comunità e la ristrutturazione delle Conferenze dei Ministri provinciali.

La riflessione su questi temi è poi proseguita nel pomeriggio all'interno dei gruppi linguistici.

Tra i vari messaggi pervenuti al Capitolo evidenziamo oggi alcuni passaggi di quello inviato per questa occasione da S.E. il card. Carlo Maria Martini: “Vivendo qui a Gerusalemme ho l'occasione di ammirare da vicino la spiritualità dei frati e la loro vita di dedizione e di sacrificio al servizio dei luoghi santi. Voi avete per questo mondo una ricetta fondamentale, che è quella della vita secondo le beatitudini evangeliche. La vostra capacità di esprimere, sull'esempio di san Francesco, la semplicità, la fraternità, il perdono e la gioia che vengono dalle beatitudini è quanto di più importante si possa fare quest'oggi per il servizio della pace da parte dei cristiani. Mi unirò in preghiera con tutte le comunità e con tutti i frati perché il Signore vi conceda di sperimentare il fuoco della Pentecoste”.
