This morning, the “De Regimine” Commission presented the different methods for composing and electing the Definitory General to the Chapter Members; subsequently the voting in regard to these procedures took place. The assembly then gave a cordial and fraternal welcome to His Eminence Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez, called by the Holy Father to preside over the election of the Minister General, which will take place tomorrow. During the afternoon a meeting of the individual Conferences of Ministers Provincial was held – and a straw vote – in preparation for the election of the Minister General. Among the authors of the various messages that arrived at the Chapter from every part of the world, we would like to quote from: His Eminence Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Archbishop of Malines-Bruxelles (“I pray to the Lord that the General Chapter of the Order will be carried out in the best of conditions and will bring the expected fruits”, Sr. M. Concetta Sfregola osc, Co-ordinating President of the Federation of Italy (“We lived the event of the General Chapter in the silence of prayer that asks for the gift of the Spirit in order to discern the signs of the times and to indicate to the whole Franciscan Family the courses to follow to respond with fidelity and in a radical way to our common vocation”) and Br. Enzo Bianchi, prior of the monastic community of Bose (“During the Chapter you should put into action the “migration” that the religious life must fulfil and is in fact fulfilling: a migration also of faith and location of the Church among men. I would like to simply say to you: seek to live according to the form of the Holy Gospel because this is the only thing necessary to fufil the will of the Lord Jesus!”).

At the end of today's session, the Assembly came together for a significant time of prayer. On this occasion all the Chapter Members wanted to express their thanks for the service carried out by the Minister General Br. Giacomo Bini, who has guided the Order from 1997 up to today. Called to guide the Franciscan fraternity towards the third millennium, his role centred on a commitment to recover certain specific priorities of Franciscan life, among which was the contemplative dimension, the life-giving listening to, and celebration of, the Word of God. Br. Giacomo carried out his service with enthusiasm and a prophetic spirit, offering his own contribution for the renewal of the Franciscan charism in the world. The Assembly thanked him with long and affectionate applause. The Chapter Members also wanted to express their thanks to the Vicar General, Br. Stephen Ottenbreit, and to the eight Friars Minor on the General Definitory, for having shown the efficacy of true work in communion. The names of the Definitors, who collaborated in the animation of one aspect and one region of the Order, are: Br. Sean Collins, Kapistran Martzall, Br. Gerardo Moore, Br. Antonion Ficcio, Br. José Rodriguez Carballo, Br. Peter Schorr, Br. Peter Williams, Br. Yu Soo Il. At the end of the celebration Br. Giacomo, the other friars of the Order's government and all the Chapter members present in the Chapter Hall, were given a CD containing the Enchiridium of all the Documents produced by the Order of Friars Minor, beginning in 1966. A precious instrument that is easy to consult and gathers together the ample reflection of the Order from post-Conciliar times to today.

Questa mattina la Commissione “de regimine” ha presentato ai Capitolari le varie modalità di composizione ed elezione del Definitorio generale; successivamente hanno avuto luogo le votazioni riguardanti tali procedure. L’assemblea ha poi rivolto un cordiale e fraterno benvenuto a S. Em. il Card. Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez, chiamato dal Santo Padre a presiedere l’elezione del Ministro generale che si terrà nella giornata di domani. Nel pomeriggio si è tenuto l’incontro delle singole Conferenze dei Ministri provinciali – e un prescrutinio - in preparazione all’elezione del Ministro generale. Tra gli autori dei vari messaggi giunti al Capitolo da ogni parte del mondo, vogliamo citare: S.Em. il Card. Godfried Danneels, Arcivescovo di Malines-Bruxelles (“Prego il Signore affinché il Capitolo generale dell’Ordine si svolga nelle migliori condizioni e porti i frutti sperati”), sr. M. Concetta Sfregola osc, Coordinatrice delle presidenti delle Federazioni d’Italia (“Abbiamo vissuto l’evento del Capitolo generale nel silenzio della preghiera che chiedeva il dono dello Spirito per discernere i segni dei tempi ed indicare a tutta la Famiglia francescana i percorsi da seguire per rispondere con fedeltà e radicalità alla nostra comune vocazione”) e fr. Enzo Bianchi, priore della Comunità monastica di Bose (“Nel capitolo voi dovrete prendere atto della “migrazione” che la vita religiosa deve compiere e sta di fatto compiendo: migrazione anche della fede e della collocazione della Chiesa tra gli uomini. Io vorrei solo dirvi: cercate di vivere secondo la forma del Santo Vangelo perché questo è l’unico necessario per adempiere la volontà del Signore Gesù!”).

A conclusione della giornata di oggi, l'Assemblea si è riunita per un significativo momento di preghiera. In questa occasione tutti i Capitolari hanno voluto esprimere il proprio ringraziamento per il servizio svolto dal Ministro generale fra Giacomo Bini, che ha guidato l'Ordine dei Frati minori dal 1997 fino ad oggi. Chiamato alla guida della fraternità francescana verso il terzo millennio, il suo impegno si è rivolto particolarmente al recupero di alcune priorità specifiche dell'essere francescani, tra cui la dimensione contemplativa, l'ascolto e la celebrazione vitale della Parola di Dio. Fra Giacomo ha svolto il suo servizio con entusiasmo e con spirito profetico, offrendo il proprio contributo per rinnovare nel mondo il carisma di san Francesco. L'assemblea lo ha salutato con un lungo e affettuoso applauso. I Capitolari hanno voluto esprimere la propria riconoscenza anche al Vicario generale, fra Stephan Ottenbreit, e agli otto Frati Minori impegnati all'interno del Definitorio generale, per aver saputo mostrare in questi anni l'efficacia di un vero lavoro di comunione. I nomi dei Definitori, che hanno collaborato all'animazione di un ambito e di una regione dell'Ordine, sono: fra Sean Collins, fra Peter Williams, fra Kapistran Martzall, fra Gerardo Moore, fra Antonio Riccio, fra José Rodriguez Carballo, fra Peter Schorr, fra Yu Soo Il. A conclusione della celebrazione è stato offerto a fra Giacomo, agli altri fratelli del Governo e all'intero gruppo dei Capitolari presenti in Aula, un CD contenente l'Enchiridion di tutti i Documenti prodotti dall'Ordine dei Frati Minori, a partire dal 1966. Uno strumento prezioso e di facile consultazione che raccoglie l'ampia riflessione dell'Ordine dagli anni del Post-Concilio fino ad oggi.
