“Joy and Peace”: (doc) these were the themes of the reflection made today before the Chapter Members by Br. Timothy Ratcliffe, Master General of the Dominicans from 1992 to 2001. Br. Timothy, in his lively and appreciated address, pointed out the vitality of the religious life in the culture of our times and asked the Assembly to keep alive Francis and Clare’s joy. It is this joy that gives authority to our preaching. No one will believe that a miserable preaching brings the good news! It is joy that opens our eyes to a world of gifts; it is joy that points to the Kingdom and invites us to carry on the adventure. This means that we must care for the joy of our brethern. We must keep alive their dreams. Ultimately that joy is deepened by vulnerability to the suffering of this world. Without that suffering to hollow our hearts, then the joy will remain superficial. (...) Have confidence that gestures and signs and symbols can speak loudly in this world. It is wonderful time therefore for a Franciscan mission. Dare to find the bold gestures that speak of the Kingdom, and you will be heard”. The presentation by Br. Timothy was followed by a debate in the Chapter Hall until the end of the morning session. In the afternoon, Br. Francesco Patton, Secretary of the General Chapter, presented to the Assembly the Timetable with the appointments of the week and a useful system for elaborating the Propositions. The Chapter Members continued with their tasks in the Commissions on the various topics during the final unit of the day.

“La gioia e la pace” (doc): sono stati questi i temi della riflessione pronunciata oggi davanti ai capitolari da fra Timothy Ratcliffe, Maestro generale dei Domenicani dal 1992 al 2001. Fra Timothy, nel suo vivace e apprezzato intervento, ha posto in evidenza la vitalità della vita religiosa nella cultura del nostro tempo e ha invitato l’Assemblea a mantenere viva la gioia di Francesco e di Chiara: “È la gioia che dà autorità alla nostra predicazione. Nessuno crederà che un predicatore triste porta buone notizie! È una gioia che apre gli occhi ad un mondo di sogni; è la gioia che indica il Regno e ci invita a continuare l’avventura. Questo significa che dobbiamo prenderci cura della gioia del nostro fratello. Dobbiamo mantenere vivi i loro sogni. Infine, quella gioia è resa più profonda dalla vulnerabilità per la sofferenza di questo mondo. Senza quella sofferenza che scava il cuore, la gioia rimarrà superficiale. (...) Abbiate fiducia che gesti e segni e simboli possono parlare forte in questo mondo. È un tempo meraviglioso per la missione francescana. Osate e cercate gesti audaci che parlano del Regno e sarete ascoltati”. All’intervento di fra Timothy ha fatto seguito il dibattito in Aula, fino al termine della mattinata. Nel pomeriggio, fra Francesco Patton, Segretario del Capitolo generale, ha presentato all’Assemblea l’Agenda con gli appuntamenti della settimana e uno schema utile per elaborare le proposizioni. Nel’ultima unità di lavoro di questa giornata, l’impegno dei capitolari è proseguito all’interno delle Commissioni tematiche.
