The Chapter started at 7:30 in the Shrine of St. Mary of the Angels, with a solemn celebration (homily) presided over by Br. Giacomo Bini, Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor.
Around him gathered the entire group of 142 chapter members and a dense crowd of faithful.
In his opening speech, Br. Giacomo Bini, Minister General of the Friars Minor, outlined the work to be done:
“With great gratitude to the Lord who has called us together, with the help of the Holy Spirit who illuminates our minds and warms our hearts, we begin the work of our General Chapter.
Welcome to this fraternal gathering, a visible sign of our identity. A sign that needs a meaning, needs to be embodied, needs a response: that is what together we will succeed in expressing over this time, by evaluating and planning our life in the Church and for a world that is thirsty for hope.
Brothers, we have in solido, together, a great responsibility before the world, before the Church, before our many brothers who, down the centuries from Francis onwards, have responded to the signs of their times with intelligence and enthusiasm. For a few days we are called to widen the space of our tents (cf. Isa. 54: 2), the horizons of our minds and hearts, beyond our personal and local interests. As a united family, together we are called to give account of the hope that dwells within us to the men and women of our time.”
The day was marked by the presence of Mons. Sergio Goretti, Bishop of Assisi, who expressed his thanks for the service that the friars have offered for eight centuries in the Church, inviting them to be true disciples of St. Francis.
After him, the assembly received the greeting of Dr. Bartolini, Mayor of Assisi, who briefly greeted the assembly in the name of Assisi’s citizens and the Council of the commune.
He expressed strong satisfaction with the mission and the work of the Franciscans in this city and in the whole world.

Il Capitolo ha preso avvio alle ore 7.30 nel Santuario di S. Maria degli Angeli, con la celebrazione solenne (omelia) presieduta da fra Giacomo Bini, Ministro generale dell’Ordine dei Frati minori.
Attorno a lui l’intero gruppo dei 142 capitolari e un folto gruppo di fedeli.
Nella relazione di apertura, fra Giacomo Bini, Ministro generale dei Frati minori, ha così inquadrato i lavori:
“Con tanta gratitudine al Signore che ci ha convocati, assistiti dallo Spirito che illumina le nostre menti e riscalda i nostri cuori, diamo inizio ai lavori del capitolo generale.
Benvenuti a questa assise fraterna, segno evidente della nostra identità. Un segno che ha bisogno di un senso, di “prendere corpo”, di una risposta: sarà quella che, insieme, riusciremo a formulare in questi giorni, verificando e proiettando la nostra vita nella Chiesa e per il mondo tanto assetato di speranza.
Fratelli, abbiamo in solido, tutti insieme, una grande responsabilità di fronte al mondo, alla Chiesa, ai tanti nostri fratelli che lungo i secoli, da Francesco in poi, hanno risposto con intelligenza ed entusiasmo ai segni dei loro tempi. Per qualche giorno siamo chiamati ad allargare lo spazio della nostra tenda (cfr. Is 54,2), gli orizzonti della nostra mente e del nostro cuore, al di là dei nostri interessi personali e locali. Come Famiglia unita, insieme siamo chiamati a rendere ragione della speranza che ci abita agli uomini e alle donne del nostro tempo”.
La giornata è stata caratterizzata dalla presenza di S.E. mons. Sergio Goretti, Vescovo di Assisi, il quale ha espresso il proprio ringraziamento al servizio che i Frati minori compiono da otto secoli nella Chiesa, invitandoli ad essere veri discepoli di san Francesco (suo discorso in mp3)
Dopo lui l’assemblea ha accolto il saluto del dott. Bartolini, Sindaco di Assisi, che ha brevemente salutato l’assemblea a nome della cittadinanza e del Consiglio comunale. Ha espresso vivo compiacimento per la missione e l’opera dei francescani in questa città e in tutto il mondo.

El Capítulo ha dado inicio a las 7:30 horas en el Santuario de Santa María de los ngeles, con la celebración solemne (homilia) presidida por fray Giacomi Bini, Ministro general de la Orden de Hermanos Menores. En torno a él el entero grupo de los 142 capitulares y un nutrido grupo de fieles.
En su Informe de apertura, fray Giacomo Bini, Ministro general, ha enmarcado del siguiente modo los trabajos capitulares:
“Con íntima gratitud al Señor, que nos ha convodado, y asistidos por el Espíritu, que ilumina nuestras mentes y caldea nuestros corazones, empezamos los trabajos del Capítulo general.
Bienvenidos a esta asamblea fraterna, signo evidente de nuestra identidad. Un signo que necesita un sentido, una “corporeidad”, una respuesta: la que lograremos, juntos, formular en estos días revisando y proyectando nuestra vida en la Iglesia y para el mundo, tan sediento de esperanza.
Hermanos: Todos nosotros tenemos, conjunta y solidariamente, una gran responsabilidad ante el mundo, la Iglesia y tantos hermanos nuestros que, después de Francisco y a lo largo de los siglos, respondieron con inteligencia y entusiasmo a los signos de su tiempo. Durante varios días estamos llamados a ensanchar el espacio de nuestra tienda (cf. Is 54, 2), los horizontes de nuestra mente y de nuestro corazón, por encima de intereses personales y locales. Como familia unida, estamos llamados, conjunta y solidariamente, a dar a nuestros contemporáneos razón de la esperanza que nos habita”.
La jornada se ha caracterizado por la presencia de S.E. mons. Sergio Goretti, Obispo de Asís, el cual ha expresado su agradecimiento por el servicio que los Hermanos menores llevan a cabo desde hace ocho siglos en la Iglesia, invitándoles a ser verdaderos discípulos de san Francisco.
Después de él la asamblea recibió el saludo del Dr. Bartolini, Alcalde de Asís, quien brevemente ha saludado a la asamblea a nombre de la ciudadanía y del Consejo comunal. Ha expresado vivamente su complacencia por la misión y la obra de los franciscanos en esta ciudad y en todo el mundo.
