Holiness Is a Pastoral Urgency, Pope Tells Friars Minor
Audience on Occasion of Franciscans' General Chapter
VATICAN CITY, JUNE 16, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Holiness is an authentic pastoral urgency, John Paul II told a group of Franciscans he met in audience.
Participants in the general chapter of the Order of Friars Minor, together with their new minister general, Father José Rodríguez Carballo, met with the Pope at the Vatican. The Franciscan order is holding its 185th general chapter in the Portiuncula in Assisi, through Saturday.
"Hold to sanctity! Here is a real pastoral urgency for our time," the Pope exhorted his visitors.
"It is time to propose again to everyone with conviction this lofty standard of Christian life," he added, referring to his apostolic letter "Novo Millennio Ineunte."
To help others to seek God above all, the Holy Father emphasized the need for religious themselves to be committed first of all to this "arduous but exalting personal and communitarian ascesis."
John Paul II urged them to follow the path marked by their order's rule and constitutions, and encouraged them to conserve the stamp of "poverty and fraternal life, docility and obedience," with their gaze fixed on Christ, as well as on "the 'poverello' of Assisi, your father and teacher."
"He teaches that the preacher must first obtain in the secret of prayer that which he will later translate in his preaching. He must first be warmed interiorly so as not to externalize cold words," the Holy Father said, quoting Thomas of Celano, St. Francis' first biographer.
Recalling the essential role of the Holy Spirit, whom St. Francis described as the "minister general" of the order, the Pope prayed that this same Spirit may grant the Friars Minor an understanding of the priorities of "the mission that God entrusts to them for the good of the Church and of the world."
Regarding the demands of the new evangelization, John Paul II pointed out that the missionary commitment "will be fruitful to the degree that harmony is fostered with the legitimate pastors, to whom the Lord has entrusted the responsibility of his flock."
He expressed the hope that the general chapter's work will contribute "to the growth of that spirit of humble listening to God and of filial adherence to the directives of the pastors of the Church which should characterize the Friars Minor."

Al recibirles en el marco del 185º Capítulo General
CIUDAD DEL VATICANO, 16 junio 2003 (ZENIT.org).- Juan Pablo II planteó la santidad como una auténtica urgencia pastoral en el tiempo presente al recibir en la mañana de este lunes a los participantes en el Capítulo General de la Orden de los Frailes Menores (franciscanos), junto al nuevo ministro general, el padre José Rodríguez Carballo.
Convocados en torno al lema «Fraternidad en misión», 142 superiores y representante de la Orden en 110 países del mundo celebran del 25 de mayo al 21 de junio el 185º Capítulo General en La Porciúncula de Asís, el lugar donde san Francisco reunía en capítulo a sus religiosos.
«¡Tended a la santidad! --exhortó el Santo Padre--. He aquí una verdadera urgencia pastoral para nuestro tiempo». «Es hora de volver a proponer a todos con convicción esta “elevada cota” de la vida cristiana», añadió haciendo referencia a su carta apostólica «Novo millennio ineunte».
Para ayudar a los demás a buscar a Dios por encima de todo, el Papa subrayó la necesidad de que los propios religiosos se empeñen en primer lugar en esta «ardua pero engrandecedora ascesis personal y comunitaria».
Por ello, les invitó a seguir el camino marcado en su Regla y en sus Constituciones y les alentó a conservar su impronta de «pobreza y vida fraterna, docilidad y obediencia», teniendo la mirada puesta en Cristo, «como hacía “el pobrecillo de Asís”, vuestro padre y maestro».
«Él enseña “que el predicador debe antes obtener en el secreto de la oración aquello que después verterá en las predicaciones. Antes debe caldearse interiormente para no exteriorizar frías palabras”, dijo Juan Pablo II citando a Tomás de Celano, el primer biógrafo de San Francisco.
Recordando el papel esencial que san Francisco reconocía al Espíritu Santo --a quien amaba definir como «Ministro General» de la Orden--, el Santo Padre pidió que este mismo Espíritu conceda a los frailes menores la comprensión de «cuáles son las prioridades de la misión que Dios les confía por el bien de la Iglesia y del mundo».
Consciente de que la Orden comparte el anhelo de la nueva evangelización, urgente en el inicio del Tercer Milenio, Juan Pablo II señaló además que el compromiso misionero «será fructífero en la medida en que se desarrolle en sintonía con los legítimos Pastores, a quienes el Señor ha confiado la responsabilidad de su rebaño».
En este contexto, expresó finalmente su deseo de que los trabajos capitulares contribuyan a «hacer crecer ese espíritu de humilde escucha a Dios y de filial adhesión a las directivas de los Pastores de la Iglesia que debe caracterizar a los Frailes Menores».

CIDADE DO VATICANO, 16 de junho de 2003 (ZENIT.org).- João Paulo II propôs a santidade como uma autêntica urgência pastoral no tempo presente ao receber na manhã desta segunda-feira os participantes do Capítulo Geral da Ordem dos Frades Menores (franciscanos), junto ao novo ministro geral, o padre José Rodríguez Carballo.
Convocados em torno do lema «Fraternidade em missão», 142 superiores e representantes da Ordem em 110 países do mundo celebram de 25 de maio a 21 de junho o 185º Capítulo Geral na Porciúncula de Assis, o lugar onde são Francisco se reunia em assembléia com seus religiosos.
«Dirigi-vos a santidade! --exortou o Papa--. Eis aí uma verdadeira urgência pastoral para nosso tempo». «É hora de voltar a propor a todos com convicção esta “elevada cota” da vida cristã», acrescentou fazendo referência à sua carta apostólica «Novo milênio ineunte».
Para ajudar os demais a buscar a Deus acima de tudo, o Papa sublinhou a necessidade de que os próprios religiosos se empenhem em primeiro lugar nesta «árdua mas engrandecedora ascese pessoal e comunitária».
Por isso, convidou-lhes a seguir o caminho marcado em sua Regra e em suas Constituições e lhes alentou a conservar seu compromisso de «pobreza e vida fraterna, docilidade e obediência», tendo os olhos voltados para Cristo, «como para “o pobrezinho de Assis”, vosso pai e mestre».
«Ele ensina “que o pregador deve antes obter no segredo da oração aquilo que depois verterá nas pregações. Antes deve temperar interiormente para não exteriorizar frias palavras”, disse João Paulo II a Tomás de Celano, o primeiro biógrafo de São Francisco.
Recordando o papel essencial que são Francisco reconhecia ao Espírito Santo --a quem amava definir como «Ministro Geral» da Ordem--. O Santo Padre pediu que este mesmo Espírito conceda aos frades menores a compreensão de «quais são as prioridades da missão que Deus lhes confia pelo bem da Igreja e do mundo».
Consciente de que a Ordem partilha o anseio da nova evangelização, urgente no início do Terceiro Milênio, João Paulo II assinalou também que o compromisso missionário «será frutífero na medida em que se desenvolve em sintonia com os legítimos Pastores, a quem o Senhor confiou a responsabilidade de seu rebanho».
Neste contexto, expressou finalmente seu desejo de que os trabalhos capitulares contribuam para «fazer crescer esse espírito de humilde escuta a Deus e de filial adesão às direções dos Pastores da Igreja que deve caracterizar os Freis Menores».

Pope asks Franciscans to work with local bishops, strive for sanctity
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II asked Franciscans to work harmoniously with local bishops and to strive for sanctity, which he called "a true pastoral urgency of our times." The pope made his remarks June 16 in a meeting at the Vatican with worldwide leaders of the Order of Friars Minor, who were holding a general chapter May 25-June 21 in Assisi, Italy, the birthplace of St. Francis. The pope said Franciscans' work to bring the good news of Christ's salvation to modern men and women would be "fruitful in the measure in which it is carried out in harmony with the legitimate pastors to whom the Lord entrusted responsibility for his flock." "In this regard, I favorably note the efforts made to overcome difficulties that have existed for some time in certain territories," the pope said without elaborating. A Franciscan spokesman told Catholic News Service the pope was referring principally to post-communist Eastern Europe.

MISSIONARY COMMITMENT IN LINE WITH LEGITIMITE PASTORS
VATICAN CITY, JUN 16, 2003 (VIS) - Today at midday in the Clemetine Hall, the Holy Father received participants in the General Chapter of the Friars Minor which is taking place in Assisi, Italy from May 25 to June 21 with Fr. Jose Rodriguez Carballo, the new minister general.
John Paul II said that at the beginning of the third millennium the "new evangelization" is very necessary: "This missionary commitment will be fruitful," he assured, "according to the measure in which it is carried out in line with the legitimite pastors, to whom the Lord has entrusted the responsibility of His flock. In this regard, I note the efforts made to overcome difficulties that have existed for some time in certain territories. I truly hope that, thanks to everyone's contribution, full understanding with diocesan authority is achieved as my venerable predecessor Pope Paul VI urged, and that it is found to be indispensable for the effective work of evangelization."
"Be holy!" exclaimed the Holy Father. "It is a real pastoral necessity for our times. In order to help others to find God above everything else, it is necessary that you, dear Brothers, be the first to commit yourself to this arduous personal asceticism and community, finding in your rule and your constitutions, 'an itinerary to follow, characterized by a specific charism recognized by the Church'."
The Pope expressed the desire that the work of the chapter "may contribute to the growth of that spirit of humble obedience to God and filial adhesion to the directives of the pastors of the Church that must distinguish the Friars Minor. May St. Francis and the saints who protect your Order accompany you!"

IMPEGNO MISSIONARIO IN SINTONIA CON I LEGITTIMI PASTORI
CITTA' DEL VATICANO, 16 GIU. 2003 (VIS). Questa mattina il Santo Padre ha ricevuto nella Sala Clementina i partecipanti al Capitolo Generale dell'Ordine dei Frati Minori, in corso dal 25 maggio al 21 giugno ad Assisi (Italia), accompagnati dal nuovo Ministro Generale, Padre José Rodríguez Carballo.
Il Santo Padre Giovanni Paolo II ha ribadito l'urgenza della "nuova evangelizzazione" all'inizio del terzo millennio ed ha affermato: "Quest'impegno missionario risulterà fruttuoso nella misura in cui sarà svolto in sintonia con i legittimi Pastori, ai quali il Signore ha affidato la responsabilità del suo gregge. Rilevo con favore, a questo riguardo, gli sforzi compiuti per superare difficoltà da tempo esistenti in alcuni territori. Auspico di cuore che, grazie al contributo di tutti, si realizzi pienamente quell'intesa con l'Autorità diocesana che fu richiesta dal mio venerato Predecessore Papa Paolo VI e che si rivela indispensabile per un'efficace opera di evangelizzazione".
"Tendete alla santità!" - ha esclamato il Papa - "Ecco una vera urgenza pastorale per il nostro tempo. (.) Per aiutare gli altri a cercare Dio al di sopra di tutto, occorre che voi per primi, carissimi Fratelli, vi impegniate in questa ardua ma esaltante ascesi personale e comunitaria, trovando nella vostra Regola e nelle vostre Costituzioni 'un itinerario di sequela, qualificato da uno carisma autenticato dalla Chiesa'".
Il Papa ha espresso l'auspicio che i lavori del Capitolo possano "contribuire a far crescere quello spirito di umile ascolto di Dio e di filiale adesione alle direttive dei Pastori della Chiesa che deve contraddistinguere i Frati Minori. Vi assistano San Francesco e i Santi Protettori dell'Ordine".

Juan Pablo II dijo que al inicio del tercer milenio es muy necesaria "la nueva evangelización": "Este compromiso misionero será fructífero -aseguró- en la medida en que se desarrolle en sintonía con los legítimos pastores, a los que el Señor ha confiado la responsabilidad de su grey. En este sentido, me alegro por los esfuerzos realizados para superar las dificultades que existen desde hace tiempo en algunos territorios. Espero de todo corazón que, gracias a la contribución de todos, se llegue a un pleno entendimiento con la autoridad diocesana, como pidió mi venerado predecesor el Papa Pablo VI y que se es indispensable para una eficaz obra de evangelización".

El Papa manifestó el deseo de que los trabajos del capítulo "contribuyan a que crezca aquel espíritu de escucha humilde de Dios y de adhesión filial a las directivas de los pastores de la Iglesia, que debe caracterizar a los frailes menores. Que os asistan san Francisco y los santos protectores de la Orden!".

ENGAGEMENT MISSIONNAIRE ET COHESION AVEC LES PASTEURS

Jean-Paul II leur a dit qu'en ce début de millénaire "la nouvelle évangélisation" est absolument nécessaire. "Cet engagement missionnaire -a- t-il ajouté- sera fructueux dans la mesure où il se déroulera en harmonie avec les pasteurs légitimes auxquels le Seigneur a confié la responsabilité du Troupeau. A ce propos, je remarque avec plaisir les efforts accomplis en vue de dépasser les problèmes existant depuis longtemps dans certaines régions. De tout coeur, j'espère que la contribution de tous permettra de parvenir à l'entente avec l'autorité diocésaine réclamée par mon prédécesseur Paul VI, et qui est indispensable en vue d'une évangélisation efficace".
"Tendez à la sainteté!", s'est ensuite exclamé le Pape. "Voici une priorité pastorale de notre temps... Pour aider les autres à chercher les autres dans leur quête de Dieu, il faut que vous, au premier chef, vous vous engagiez dans cette ascèse ardue mais exaltante, personnelle comme communautaire. Trouvez dans votre règle et vos constitutions 'une voie d'exemple caractérisée par un charisme qui soit reconnu par l'Eglise'".
Enfin, le Pape a exprimé le voeu de voir les travaux capitulaires "contribuer à accroître l'esprit d'humble écoute de Dieu et de filiale adhésion aux directives des pasteurs de l'Eglise, qui doivent caractériser les Frères Mineurs. Puisse saint François et les autres protecteurs de l'ordre vous venir en aide!".
