Reflection by Br Massimo Reschiglian ofm, Prov. Min. of Assisi

Here, before this Crucifix, Francis’ ecclesial mission began. What we are contemplating this evening is both majestic and solemn and must have appeared so to the young Francis when, just under twenty years old, after having failed as a knight, he stopped in this church to pray using the words: “Most high and glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart.”

The Legend of the Three Companions tells us: “Francis can you not see that my house is falling into ruin? Go, then, and rebuild it for me.” (L3C 13). Fearful and bewildered, the young man replied: “I will do it willingly, Lord.” (L3C 13). The contemplation of this face of glory puts into his heart an urgency produced by the Spirit, a passion, a voice, to which he wants to respond with all his being; he is guided by Christ, contemplated in this icon, and realises that his Church is failing, that the poor of the earth need him, that the men and women he meets every day are wounded, sick, in body and especially in spirit and, finally, that He lives in every church in the world.

Celano tells us (3C 2) that: “from that moment the memory of the Lord’s passion was stamped on his heart with a deep brand-mark.” Contemplation, then, is not just the beginning of the mission, but also of an interior transformation that Francis lives throughout his life. The memory of, and longing for, this face filled with mercy takes root in his heart. Revealed in that face is the greatness of God, who has chosen the way of weakness and minority to make himself known to us.
