Br. José Rodriguez Carballo is the new Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor. The 142 representatives of the Friars Minor elected him today in Assisi at St. Mary of the Angels, where they are celebrating a General Chapter called on the theme of "Fraternity in Mission".
The election of Br. José, who will be 50 years old this coming August, took place under the presidency of the pontifical delegate His Eminence the Card. Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez.
Currently Br. José has the job of General Definitor and of General Secretary for Formation and Studies. Before this he served as Minister of the Franciscan Province of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), as President of the Union of Friars Minor in Europe and as Director of young religious in formation. His academic curriculum is also significant: after having received a Licence in Biblical Theology in Jerusalem and a Licence in Sacred Scripture in Rome, he taught these subjects in the major seminary in the Spanish city of Vigo and in the Theological Faculty of Santiago de Compostela.
Today Br. Jose has been entrusted with the task of guiding and guarding the life of the over 16,000 Friars Minor who work in 110 countries on all 5 continents. The Order possesses a particular missionary style, marked by poverty and fraternal life, animated by the spirit of contemplation and a sincere search for justice, peace and the integrity of creation, in the evangelical style of Francis of Assisi.
The title "Minister" is taken from the teaching and the example of Jesus. As St. Francis wrote in the Earlier Rule: "Let the ministers and servants remember what the Lord says: I have not come to be served but to serve; and the care of the brothers' souls has been entrusted to them." (ER 4:6). Francis did not like conventional titles: to be "minister and servant" meant putting oneself humbly and charitably at the service of the brothers.
Br. José Rodriguez Carballo is, in historical succession, the 119th successor of Saint Francis. He succeeds Br. Giacomo Bini who has guided the Order of Friars Minor in the last six year period.
