The poet Br. Pacifico, one of the companions of St Francis of Assisi, established the first Franciscan Community in France at Vézelay in 1217, before continuing the journey to Saint Denis (Paris). After eight centuries, the Franciscan family counts in France today more than 3000 members (OFM, OFMConv, OFMCap., Poor Clares, Franciscan Sisters, and seculars of all ages).

Trump regarding the treatment of immigrants and refugees entering our country have been troubling to a wide ranging group of citizens across the United States. As Franciscans, we are morally outraged by and resolutely denounce the January 27, 2017 Executive Order addressing the U.S. immigrant and refugee admission program.

While the action’s stated intention is to protect the U.S. from terrorism, it is ill conceived and counter to our country’s founding principles.

Franciscans Open a Unique Museum in Jerusalem

The Terra Sancta Museum is the world’s first museum dedicated to the roots of Christianity and the preservation of the Holy Places. The museum is an initiative of the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land, who for more than 800 years have safeguarded the Holy Places.

The Terra Sancta Museum is being built in two Franciscan buildings of the Custody of the Holy Land, the Monastery of the Flagellation and the St. Saviour Monastery.

Notification of the Death of Br. Oswald Gill, OFM

Br. Oswald (Thomas Pearse) Gill of the Province of Ireland died on Sunday, January 8, 2017 in Cork, Ireland. He was 99 years old with 80 years of religious life and 73 years of priesthood. He taught classics for 22 years and then volunteered to minister in Chile and later in California before moving to the General Curia where he was Assistant to the General Secretary and Vice Secretary for Missionary Evangelisation. He returned to Ireland in 1997 and served in Limerick before moving to Cork in 2008. May he rest in peace.

Br. Benet Fonck of the U.S.A. Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus died on Friday, December 23, 2016 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet, Illinois.

Br. Benet worked with the Secular Franciscans in various places in the United States. He then served in Rome from 1980-1985 at the OFM General Curia as the General Spiritual Assistant for the Secular Franciscan Order and also did work in writing the new constitutions of the Secular Franciscans. After his time in Rome, he returned to the United States and worked in various ministries. May he rest in peace.

On December 14, 2106, Franciscan Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, died in São Paulo, Brazil at the age of 95. The Cardinal lived 76 years of religious life, 71 years of priesthood, 50 years of the episcopate and 43 years of cardinalate. He was Archbishop of São Paulo from 1970 to 1998.

Statement regarding the future of the Franciscan International Study Centre

After forty-six years of existence, the Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury will close on the 30th of June 2017. Its Board of Trustees passed the following resolution on 1st December 2016:

“The Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury shall cease functioning at the end of Trinity Term 2017, and begin the process of closure and the eventual alienation of the property.”

Br. Anselm Moons, OFM, a member of the Holy Martyrs of Gorcum Province died on November 13th 2016 in Warmond, the Netherlands, at the age of 92. Born Wilhelmus Andreas Moons, he was a Professed friar for 74 years and a priest for 67 years, during which time he was a missionary in Pakistan where he served as Provincial Minister, and as the first Rector of Christ the King Seminary. In 1979, Anselm was elected General Definitor for Asia.

On 29 October 2016, the Foundation of St Francis of Assisi in Myanmar marked its 10th foundation anniversary with the Eucharistic Celebration presided by the Minister General, Br. Michael A. Perry. Present during the celebration were Br. Greg Redoblado, the Definitor General for Asia and Oceania and Delegate General of the Foundations of Thailand and Myanmar, Br. Ignatius Lam, Provincial Minister of St. Francis of Assisi in Vietnam, Br. John Nguyen Gia Thin, (former member of the Myanmar Foundation) and Br. Arvind Kerketta, from the Foundation of Our Lady of the Angels in Thailand. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) sisters and the SFO’s of Myanmar were also present, Members of the Jesuits, the La Salle brothers, Dominican sisters, Canossians, the Faithful Companions of Jesus and many others also came to join the celebration. A festive lunch followed and a cultural show in the evening was performed by the friars and the FMM sisters.

Obituary of Friar John David Vaughn, OFM

A quiet, humble friar, he was beloved and admired by all who knew him, especially in his home Province of St. Barbara, a region of the Franciscans in the western United States.

Notice of the Death of Br. John Vaughn, Former Minister General

Br. John Vaughn, OFM (born in 1928) was the 116th General Minister of the Order and served in this role from 1979 to 1991, after which he returned to his Province in California and formed many friars as Novice Master of the St. Barbara Province. In recent years he had been in failing health, but continued to be an inspiration and spiritual father to many. He passed away in Santa Barbara, California early in the morning of October 10th. May his humble and noble soul rest in peace.

EAC Ministers’ Meeting in Cebu

The Provincial Ministers, Custodes, President and Secretaries of the East Asian Conference (EAC) gathered for their Annual Meeting in Cebu City, Philippines on 5-8 September 2016 with this year’s theme, “Moving to the Peripheries as Brothers and Lesser Ones.” 

The Minister General, Br. Michael Anthony Perry, in his message delivered by General Definitor Br. Lino Gregorio Redoblado, renewed his invitation for more friars to volunteer as missionaries to fourteen mission areas under the General Curia. About 60 friars are needed to volunteer to these new mission fields. He said that what is needed are “men of deep faith who are committed to living in fraternity and sharing life and mission together, men who are flexible, capable of learning new languages, willing to collaborate with fellow friars and also with the people of God, and open to learning and sharing new cultural and life experiences.”
