Haiti, 20 months after
Twenty months after the earthquake, the situation in Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti, continues to be dramatic for hundreds of thousands of people who are still homeless and jobless, lacking water supply, and toiling to find sufficient food.
Our brothers, subdivided in 3 Fraternities, try to take care of a good number of poor people, rendering at least their fraternal closeness and help through various initiatives. In this way, the contributions coming from the different Franciscan families and many other benefactors are intelligently and heartily distributed by the Friars Minor of Haiti (9 professed, 3 students of Theology, 4 novices, 7 postulants).
In particular, for some time now, the Fraternity of S. Alexandre opened wide some doors for numerous children even before the earthquake, such as; the street children who are orphans or without guardians, besides having no food at all.
In previous months the three brothers relentlessly, yet ineffectually, looked for a land to build a welcome house for about 50 children who are being followed closely, because even the cadastral maps of the Capital are flawed. A piece of land was finally found and in the following months the construction will begin.
The friars of Haiti greet and thank the benefactors for the charity they received which they, in turn, passionately gave back to the people.
