Br. Settimio Maroncelli, ofm
Br. Settimio Maroncelli, OFM, died suddenly Monday, April 16 at 19.30, at the Provincial Infirmary in Bologna. He was a member of the Province of “Christ the King” of the Friars Minor of Emilia-Romagna (Italy); he spent almost his entire life at the International Fraternity of St. Anthony in Rome, and as a professor at the service of the Holy See. Brother Settimio was 69 years of age, 51 of religious life and 43 years as a priest. Having completed the initial and theological formation in his Province, he made his solemn profession on May 1, 1967, and was ordained a priest on March 15, 1969. Later, his superiors sent him at the International College of St. Anthony of Rome to study Canon Law at the Pontifical University Antonianum. In Rome he received the title of “Doctor of Canon Law” by publishing the thesis: The Religious and the Local Church. Doctrine of Vatican II. When he returned to his Province in 1971, he dedicated himself to teaching canon law at the Theological College in Bologna. Having also held positions as Guardian, Parish Chaplain, and Assistant to the SFO, in 1983, he received the request from the Congregation for the Clergy to be appointed Br. Settimio to work at the Secretariat of the same Congregation while at the same time professor at the Pontifical University Antonianum. In the summer of 2010 Brother Settimio was appointed Prelate Auditor of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota, a mandate conferred on him by the Holy Father in recognition for 27 years at the service of the Congregation for the Clergy. He carried out this service with constant commitment and passion.
On December 29, Br Settimio was hit by a syncope, which definitely weakened him, thus leading him to resign his service at the Roman Rota and the Pontifical University Antonianum, where for decades he taught legal subjects.
The funeral of Brother Settimio will be presided over by the Provincial Minister on Thursday, April 19 at 11:00 AM at the Basilica of St. Anthony in Bologna as well as in the afternoon at 15.00 at the Parish Church of St. Mary in Cerreto (RN) presided by Msgr. Francis Lambiasi.
The International Fraternity of St. Anthony, the Pontifical University Antonianum, and the Minister General with his Definitory, on behalf of the entire Order, thank the Lord and the Province of Bologna for the gift of Brother Settimio and entrust him to the mercy of the Heavenly Father.
