Friars Minor in Chile: EFFECTS OF THE EARTHQUAKE
All the brothers are well physically. Regarding the status of the friaries and churches we can report the following:
Limache
The church suffered considerable structural damage and most likely has to be pulled down due to the danger of collapse caused by aftershocks. The house did not suffer much.
Valparaíso
The damage to the entrance portico and the tower are the same that were detected before the earthquake and need, anyway, urgent intervention.
San Francisco de Alameda (Santiago)
The convent was left with some significant cracks by falling plaster in the rooms of the brothers. The church stood up well, but there are some cracks and as a precaution we are not dealing with it at this time pending a study of its structure.
Recoleta Franciscana (Santiago)
Maybe it was one of the houses that suffered less under the ravages of nature. In the church some pieces of the ornaments of the arches came down, but without serious consequences.
Patronato de San Antonio de Padua (Santiago)
The church has serious structural damage and is not possible, for safety reasons, to make use of it. The friary also suffered serious structural damage to the main staircase and on the second floor.
Casa de Formación San Felipe de Jesús (Santiago)
In the church there was loosening of some planks from the ceiling but without major consequences.
The house was damaged in the stucco of the first and second floors and few cracks to take care of.
La Cisterna (Santiago)
There was no damage
San Francisco de Mostazal
The church has some noticable cracks. In the friary there are some structural damage and much of the perimeter wall surrounding the parish and the Retreat House collapsed.
Parral
The belfry has serious cracks; lost most of the images and some electrical fittings came down. In the friary we lost all dishes and some appliances.
Chillán
The church has a very severe structural damage and will have to study its possible demolition. The old part of the house also suffered damage.
Concepción
There was great damage especially in the church and chapels. The friary stood up well.
Angol
Both the church and the friary suffered severe structural damage and according to a technical opinion, the house must be demolished.
Temuco
The church is cracked in some of its interior walls, bellfry and cupola. Also several images were broken.
