The Office of the General Secretary is manned by Br. Aidan McGrath ofm
(Hiberniae Prov. – HIBERNIA) as General Secretary and his assistants Br. Stefano Lovato ofm
(S. Antonii Fratrum Minorum Prov. – ITALIA) and Br. Juan Isidro Aldana Maldonado ofm
(S. Fidei Prov. – Columbia). It is this Office’s duty to keep all official correspondence between the Government of the Order and the various Entities and friars throughout the world.
The last Tempo Forte of 2016 took place between 12th and 16th December.
Altogether a total of 30 files (plichi) were examined during this Tempo Forte, dealing mostly with ordinary administrative matters. (more…)
The Tempo forte of November 2016 lasted almost two weeks, the second of which (14th – 18th November) was spent in conjunction with 20 Visitators General. In the first week of the meeting, after sharing some information about their various activities in the weeks since the end of the September Tempo forte, the Minister and Definitory devoted their attention to the ordinary matters of business. The Minister General and the Definitory met for the first few days of the Tempo Forte of September 2016 at the Porziuncola Centre at Bahar iċ-Ċaghaq, Malta. Br. Richard Stanley Grech, the Minister Provincial of the Province of St. Paul the Apostle, in Malta, was a most attentive host. In the course of the time in Malta, the Definitory reviewed their first year of service to the Order and began to plan their activities for the years 2017-2019. At the heart of this planning was the decision to celebrate the Plenary Council of the Order in Nairobi in June 2018. Much time was given over to a consideration of the themes to be presented to the Council for deliberation. A more formal announcement of the decisions will be communicated at a later date.
The Tempo Forte of July 2016 ran from 4th to 15th July. It coincided with the assembly of the Foundation of St. Francis of Assisi, in Russia and Kazakhstan, which was held in the General Curia. This allowed the brothers of the Foundation to meet with the Minister and Definitory formally in session and informally at prayer and at meals and recreation. On 11th July, the Minister and most of the Definitory travelled to Assisi to take part in the joint celebration of the Pardon of Assisi, organised by the whole Franciscan family in Umbria. (more…)
The Minister General and Definitory met at the General Curia for the Tempo Forte of 10th to 20th May 2016. At the beginning of their meeting, the Minister, the Vicar and the Definitors shared in some detail their various experiences since the previous Tempo Forte and took some time to reflect together on the situation of several Entities in different parts of the world and the serious challenges facing them today. The Minister General and Definitory met at the General Curia for the Tempo Forte of 7th – 18th March 2016.
The Minister and Definitory shared some information on their various activities since the January Tempo Forte, and devoted a lot of time to planning their activities for the coming sexennium, especially the meetings with the individual Conferences. This will be communicated to the Presidents at the meeting in May. A good deal of time was also devoted to the question of personnel in several of the houses and Entities dependent on the Minister General.
In the course of the two weeks, the Definitory managed to deal with more than 121 different files (plichi) covering a whole range of administrative matters that included dispensations from temporary vows, the ratification of extra-capitular elections, and the approval of candidates to be elected in the forthcoming Provincial Chapters. The General Definitory held its first meetings of the New Year 2016 between 18th and 29th January, with some extraordinary sessions deferred until the beginning of February.
This year, there was no meeting of new Ministers and Custodes since no Provincial Chapters took place within 2015, in accordance with the decision to move Provincial Chapters out of the same year as the General Chapter. (more…)
The General Definitory met between 9th and 20th November, on 7th December, and again between 14th and 18th December. In the aftermath of the General Chapter, this was a period of particularly intense work, with the appointment of many commissions, delegates and other officials. In addition, during the second week of the November meeting, the Definitory met with 25 recently named General Visitators. (more…)

The Minister General and the Definitory met on several occasions during the months of September and October 2015: from 7th – 9th September in the General Curia; from 10th – 13th September in Convento S. Francesco, Maiori, in the Province of Salerno; and again in the General Curia from 14th – 18th September, 28th – 29th September, and 5th – 9th October. (more…)
