It is the duty of the General Secretariat for Formation and Studies, in dependence on the Minister General: 1. to moderate all formative activity in the Order; 2. to promote and coordinate formation and studies with suitable means and appropriate initiatives; (Cf. PCO 81, 74.) 3. to ensure the implementation of all that has been expressed and decided by the authorities of the Order with regard to formation and studies and to oversee their observance; (Cf. PCO 81, 89.) 4. to develop an ever-greater cooperation and dialogue between formators. (Cf. PCO 81, 89.)
The Executive Committee for Formation, which consists of three friars elected by the International Council for Formation, met in the General Curia on 30th and 31st January 2017.
Two of the three members of the Committee were present: Br. Andreas Brands, of the Province of Germany, and Br. Peter Mogal, of the Custody of Pakistan. (more…)

The Feast Day of the PUA (Pontifical University, Antonianum) and of the Grand Chancellor (the OFM Minister General, Br. Michael A. Perry) was held on January 16th, 2017.
Taking place in the Aula Magna of the Antonianum, a full academic program had been drawn up to mark the event, under the chairmanship of Prof. Stefano Cavalli. (more…)
The inaugural meeting of the International Board of the Collegium Sancti Bonaventurae – International Center for Franciscan Studies and Research took place on January 10th & 11th last. A new name has been given to a Centre for Studies that has its roots in the wonderful Quaracchi tradition, which subsequently moved to Grottaferrata, and lately to St. Isidore’s, Rome. The traditional Latin name of the Quaracchi College has been combined with an English subtitle, indicating a future with an international focus. (more…)
The Feast Day of the PUA (Pontifical University, Antonianum) and of the Grand Chancellor (the OFM Minister General) will be held on January 16th, 2017. A full program has been drawn up to mark the event. Prof. Cavalli will chair the day and will introduce various speakers — Profs. Burigana and Sgroi of the PUA; the Lutheran Archbishop of Uppsala, Antje Jackelén; and the PUA Rector, Prof. Mary Melone, who will welcome the participants.
The celebrations will conclude with an afternoon performance of “Francis, dust of God”, by Riccardo Tordoni. (more…)
After forty-six years of existence, the Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury will close on the 30th of June 2017. Its Board of Trustees passed the following resolution on 1st December 2016:
“The Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury shall cease functioning at the end of Trinity Term 2017, and begin the process of closure and the eventual alienation of the property.” (more…)
On 28 November, an academic ceremony to honor Emeritus Professor Br. Francisco Víctor Sánchez Gil took place at the Theological Institute of Murcia. In his long career, Br. Victor was Director of three Franciscan journals: Carthaginensia, which he founded as the official journal of the theological Institute; Archivo Ibero-americano, a journal of Franciscan history for the Spanish-speaking world; and Archivum Franciscanum Historicum, an historical scientific journal published by the Collegio San Bonaventura. On Sunday, November 13th, 2016, the General Curia had a visit from some OFM novices currently doing their novitiate in Piedimonte Matese (Caserta – Italy). The novices were in Rome in order to participate in the Jubilee of Mercy for the Homeless, along with their Novice Master, Br. Massimo Tunno OFM. (more…)
The Pontifical University Antonianum held an International Conference on Duns Scotus entitled “A New Metaphysics for a New Theology. John Duns Scotus on the 750th anniversary of His Birth” November 7-8, 2016 ”
Organized – by P. Porro, University of Paris; by L. Sileo, OFM, J. Percan, OFM, President of the Scotus Commission; by A. Hernandez, OFM, Vice Rector of the PUA; by A. Cacciotti OFM, Dean of the Faculty of theology of the PUA; by P. Messa, OFM, Dean of SSSMF of the PUA. The Conference, in its two days, saw a succession of important international speakers. It was welcomed by Mary Melone, Rector of the PUA, by Josip Percan, President of Scotus Commission, by Michael a. The University cannot be self-referential, rather it must become a real and virtual place capable of putting together the experiences of the different cultures of the world: this is the spirit with which a cooperation agreement was signed on languages for a new communication: towards the Academy of civilizations. The institutions involved are: the Università Telematica Internazionale UNINETTUNO, the Pontifical University Antonianum, ICDE (International Council for Open and Distance Education) and EADTU (European Association of Distance Teaching Universities).
