It is this Office’s duty to study and present to the diocesan curia and the Holy See for beatification and canonisation the cases of persons (mainly Franciscans from all the Franciscan Family) who have shown concrete signs of holiness in the heroic exercise of all virtues.

Beatification of Eight Friars Minor

Scutari, 5 November 2016 – Amongst the thirty-eight Blessed martyrs of the Communist persecution in Albania (1945-1974), are numbered 8 religious of the Order of the Friars Minor: a bishop and seven priests. From 1944 for nearly 50 years the Albanian Catholic Church suffered harsh persecution at the hands of one of the fiercest Communist dictatorial regimes of the present age. During this period our martyrs were condemned to death, or died under torture or due to the harsh conditions of imprisonment. They accepted for love of Christ an unjust sentence: they welcomed suffering with a patient spirit and a heroic faith. At the moment of death they had words of forgiveness for their persecutors and trust in God, for themselves and for their tortured country. (more…)

Beatification Of The Venerable Servant Of God, Francesco Maria Greco Cosenza, Saturday 21 May 2016

Francesco Maria Greco, was born on July 27, 1857 in Acri, in what was then the Diocese of San Marco e Bisignano. Preparing for his father’s profession, pharmacist, while still a student in Naples he felt a call to the priesthood. At that time while visiting the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, still under construction, he asked for the grace of becoming “a learned priest for doing good ministry.” He conquered the resistances of his parents and was ordained a priest in 1881. In Acri he became arch-priest-pastor of the Church of St. Nicholas, from 1888 to his death. (more…)

On Tuesday, May 9, the Holy Father Francis received in a private audience, His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. During the audience the Pope authorized the Congregation to promulgate the Decree on the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Rafael Emanuel Almansa Riaño, a diocesan priest, who had been professed in the Order of Friars Minor, born in Bogotá on 2 August 1840 and died on June 28, 1927. The Franciscan Martyrs of Albania

PROMULGATION OF DECREES

On 26 April 2016, the Holy Father Pope Francis gave a private audience to His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. During the course of the audience the Pope authorized the Congregation to promulgate decrees regarding:

The martyrdom of the Servants of God, Msgr. Vincenç Prennushi, OFM, Archbishop of Durres and Primate of Albania, and his 37 companions, killed in Albania out of hatred of the faith between 1945-1974.

The heroic virtues of the Servant of God, Sosio Del Prete, a professed priest of the Order of Friars Minor, founder of the Little Servants of Christ the King, who was born on December 28th, 1885 in Frattamaggiore, in the Diocese of Aversa, Province of Naples, and who died in Naples on January 28th, 1952. Centennial of Blessed Father Frederic’s Death

On 4 March 2016, the Franciscans of Eastern Canada announced the various festivities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Blessed Father Frederic Janssoone on 4 August 2016.

The celebration begins 20-22 May at the Andre-Coindre residence on the campus of Our Lady of Foy in Saint Augustin-de-Desmaures. It will continue on 30-31 July and 5 August at the St. Anthony Chapel of Trois Rivieres, as well as 6 August at Saint Elie-de-Caxton, a small village where “Father Frederic inaugurated a way of the cross,” says Br. Roland Bonenfant, an organizer of the feast and vice-postulator of this holy man’s canonization. A special hymn for the occasion has been composed by Br. Guylain Prince, another member of the organizing committee. (more…)
