Venerable Maria Francesca di Gesù Bambino, Nun of the Order of Saint Clare

On 2 October 2019, the Holy Father Francis received in audience His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and authorized the Dicastery to promulgate the Decree concerning the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Maria Francesca di Gesù Bambino Sánchez Villoria, professed nun of the Order of Saint Clare.

MARIA FRANCESCA DI GESU’ BAMBINO
Sánchez Villoria
professed nun of the Order of Saint Clare
(1905-1991)

The Venerable Servant of God Maria Francesca di Gesù Bambino was born in Fuenteguinaldo (Salamanca) on December 25, 1905. She was sanctified in the monastery of the Poor Clares of “Corpus Christi” in Salamanca, which she had entered in 1923 and where she held the position of portress, sacristan, novice mistress and abbess. Her experience of contemplation was supported by the gift of keeping vigil in prayer for long hours of the night, leaving very few hours for sleep. Her charity was manifested in her joyful service to the community and in a fruitful “apostolate of the parlour”, in the welcoming of those seeking advice and comfort. In the 68 years of her religious life, she was most faithful in the practice of humility and poverty and was strong in illnesses and trials. By combining heroism and spontaneity with her witness, she made holiness desirable and possible. The faithful recognized in her an admirable, loving and neighbourly woman, dedicated to comforting everyone with the gifts of prophecy, discernment, piety, healing and seraphic love that God poured out on her. Rich in merit, she fell asleep in the Lord on 28 February 1991. The Cause for Beatification began in 2002.
