The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity represents one of the most significant moments in the ecumenical calendar. This year it is celebrated January 18 to 25 and marks a special milestone by commemorating the 1700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, a fundamental moment in the history of Christianity.
This initiative, which has its roots in 1908 with the "Octave of Prayer for Church Unity" initiated by Paul Wattson, has evolved into a global movement uniting Christians of different denominations in common prayer.
This year's central theme is "Do you believe this?", based on the dialogue between Jesus and Martha in John 11:26, and emphasizes the importance of the Nicene Creed as an expression of common Christian faith. The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches has prepared material containing biblical reflections and prayers for each day.
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity invites all believers to unite in prayer and reflection. It is a unique opportunity to strengthen the bonds that unite us, overcome historical barriers, and give joint witness to our faith in Christ.
Christian communities worldwide are called to organize prayer meetings, dialogue moments, and activities that foster mutual understanding. Participation in this week not only enriches our own faith but contributes to the visible witness of the unity for which Christ prayed: "that all may be one."
This year, as we commemorate the historic Council of Nicaea, the invitation is especially significant to remember and celebrate the common foundations of our Christian faith.
