Modern Heroes
Friar Martyrs
in the XX Century
We joyfully comply with the request of His Holiness, John Paul II, who with the
upcoming Third Christian Millenium in mind, invites the Church to update its
"Martyrology" by adding to it the names of those who in our century have suffered
martyrdom for the Faith (cf. TMA 37). The Union of Major Superiors (UISG
and USG - Union of Superiors General) has taken the time to gather data pertaining to various Religious families.
For the Order of the Friars Minor (OFM) the gathering of this data has been
prepared by the Postulator General. He has conducted this survey in February
of 1996 on a worldwide level with the following results.
These responses have come from 34 of the 128 Provinces of the Order.
Of entities or nations in which one assumes that there have been martyrs in this
century, the following have not responded: Albania, China, Israel (Holy Land),
Lithuania, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Vietnam.
The are reports of about 342 Friars Minors killed "in odium Fidei" in the various
parts of the globe.
| The Martyrs Divided By Nation |
| Spain | 216 | Germany | 7 | Kenya | 2 |
| Poland | 40 | France | 6 | Canada | 1 |
| Croatia | 32 | Belgium | 3 | Czech Rep | 1 |
| Italy | 20 | Mexico | 3 | Slovakia | 1 |

Pope Pius XII has beatified eight martyrs on the 24 November 1946.
45 other Martyrs have either had the "super Martyrio" canonical inquiry
(process) begun by the competent ecclesiastical Tribunals or their Cause is
being studied by the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints.
The "Positio super Martyrio" for 36 of the Spanish Martyrs has already been
readied and presented to the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints. The
Theological Consulters or Cardinals and Bishops will be called upon to
express their vote or judgement upon the "Positio"
The four "Positiones" presented
in regards to the Servants of God are:
|
- Victor Chillas Fernandez and 21 Companions
- Felix Echevarria Gorostiaga and 6 Companions
- Pascual Fortunato Almela and 4 Companions
- Antonio Faundez Lopez and 1 Companion

The Office of Postulation has the intention of gathering into a volume the
news regarding the circumstances and the cause of martyrdom of the
single Martyrs, joining biographical information with the photographs
of the Martyrs and of the places of their martyrdom. The volume will
probably be published by the end of 1999.
