Minister Provincial (Kapisztran Ferences Provincia)
"On the 23rd of April we discovered a huge pile of books walled in in our convent in Gyöngyös. The books were hid in a staircase which was closed after a fire in 1904. Some of the friars knew about this staircase in 1950, when the dissolution of religious orders by the communist state was in anticipation. They used it for hiding some of the library. The information was kept a secret, and all those who organized the hiding have died since. ![]() ![]() Surely the most valuable piece in the pile of books is the Fust Bible. Johannes Fust acquired the workshop of Gutenberg by a lawsuit and printed this 48-line Bible there in 1462. A doctor of theology from Krakow bought it 3 years later and brought it later on to Hungary. Gyöngyös had long been a study center of our province and the Bible had been used for study purposes. It is the only Fust Bible in Hungary. There exist about 70 such Bibles in the whole world.
The Bible, together with chalices, coins, seals and other documents were presented at a press-conference on 14th May. On restoration, the Fust Bible will be put on temporary exhibition. Otherwise it will be available for researchers. Beside the Hungarian public, the discovery will receive larger publicity: a short newsflash will be presented on CNN World News within a couple of days.
