Feb. 8 is “International Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking” that was announced by Pope Francis. There are millions of poor and vulnerable people around the world who are systematically being trafficked and manipulated. And almost one third of the victims are under age of 18. The victims of human trafficking are exposed to sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, forced marriage, illegal adoption, forced labor, organ trafficking and criminal practices while being deeply wounded in body and mind. For us Franciscans, Christmas is when we celebrate the mystery of God; it’s not just a festive season. Like St. Francis, who celebrated the mystery of the Incarnation in Greccio, Italy. We also commemorate that God, in the Word made flesh, has saved the world. The mystery of how God chose to be born in poverty in Bethlehem is the source of Franciscan joy at Christmas. So, as we prepare to celebrate Christmas, we would like to share a few suggestions with you, keeping JPIC principles in mind, and letting you know about the “buy nothing at the holidays” movement. The resource booklet which you are about to read is likewise an exhortation to be open to the world around us, to listen attentively to all those creatures who inhabit this little planet, our common home. It arises from an urgent concern that the Cry of the Earth and the Cries of the Poor are being disregarded and that, as Franciscans, we must be partners in dialogue, making our specific contribution to the healing of our world, and of the people who live in it…

IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 17, 2016
May the Lord give you peace! This is the traditional greeting of St. Francis of Assisi, one that has been adopted over the eight centuries of the Franciscan Order by its members. It signals one of the main themes in the life of our founder and his followers: the call to be instruments of peace.
This week, here in the United States, we once again find ourselves dealing with yet another instance of the seemingly endless stream of senseless violence in our land. This time with 49 innocent deaths, and an equal number of injuries, at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. There have been 182 mass shootings this year alone. These shootings have taken the lives of 288 people and injured another 673. Six of these shootings have taken place since Orlando. These tragic moments serve add to a culture of fear in our nation that makes us suspicious of anyone we define as “other.” (more…)

This month marks the first anniversary of the publication of Pope Francis’ Encyclical on Care for our Common Home, with its incipit taken from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures.

June 18, 2016 is the first anniversary of the encyclical, Laudato Si’. The encyclical pointed out the ecological crisis of our times and strongly suggested that we listen to the cries of the poor and our Mother Earth and response to it. When the encyclical was released believers as well as non-believers acclaimed it and the local churches worked hard to adapt and integrate it into their lifestyle. Keeping that in mind, we would like to remind the friars of a coming global event.
June 5 is World Environment Day. (more…)
