VI OFM Under Ten Chapter of Mats — Assisi, 2026

About us

The VI OFM Under Ten Chapter of Mats will be held in Assisi, Italy, from 4 to 12 July 2026, in a context of particular significance for the entire Franciscan Family: the commemoration of the eight hundredth anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. This anniversary offers an opportunity to renew the spirit that inspired the mission of the Poverello and to rediscover the vitality of a vocation which, through the centuries, continues to generate fraternity, service, and hope in the world.

The gathering brings together friars of the Order of Friars Minor with fewer than ten years of solemn profession, coming from the various Entities and Conferences of the Order. In this commemorative and jubilee context, the Chapter of Mats presents itself as a privileged space to live international fraternity in a concrete way, to discern the challenges of our time, and to rekindle the Franciscan missionary commitment in today’s world.

Objectives

The VI OFM Under Ten Chapter of Mats has three fundamental objectives. First, to offer participants an authentic experience of internationality and interculturality: the Order of Friars Minor is present in many countries and cultures, and this diversity is a spiritual and human richness that reflects the universality of the Franciscan charism. Bringing together friars from different regions of the world makes it possible to discover the beauty of a fraternity that transcends borders, languages, and cultural contexts.

Second, the Under Ten Chapter seeks to open a space for reflection on the realities lived by young friars within the Order. The hopes, difficulties, and challenges that arise in fraternal and missionary life need to be listened to and discerned together, in a synodal spirit that values the voice and experience of each brother. From shared discernment, concrete proposals may emerge to be offered to the Entities, the Conferences, and the General Chapter of 2027.

Finally, the gathering aims to be a celebration of the gift of the Franciscan missionary vocation: a time of gratitude and renewal, in which friars are called to reaffirm their commitment to universal fraternity, the promotion of peace, and a solidarity-based presence on the world’s peripheries.

History

History of the International “Under Ten” Chapters of Mats

The International “Under Ten” Chapter of Mats is a meeting convened by the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor to bring together friars from around the world who have fewer than ten years of solemn profession. Inspired by the Chapter of Mats experienced by St. Francis and his friars at the origins of the Order, this gathering offers young friars a privileged space for fraternity, prayer, reflection, and sharing about their vocation and mission.

At each edition, delegates from the different Conferences and Entities of the Order meet with the Minister General and the General Definitory to share the joys and challenges of Franciscan life, identify paths of renewal, and formulate proposals for the governance of the Order.

This Chapter bears witness to the vitality and universality of the Franciscan charism, which continues to be renewed in new generations of friars.

To date, the Order has held five Under Ten Chapters of Mats:

Santiago de Compostela (Spain), September 1995

Canindé (Brazil), July 2001

The Holy Land, July 2007

Guadalajara and Mexico City (Mexico), June 2012

Taizé (France), July 2019

Pre-Chapters

The goal of the online continental pre-Chapters is to create a space for virtual meetings between the General Government and the OFM Under Ten from each continent. This will allow us to share the results of the survey conducted in January 2026 and explore some of the topics that will be addressed in the VI OFM Under Ten Chapter of Mats, which will be held in Assisi from July 4 to 12, 2026.

The following are the dates and times of the continental pre-Chapters:

  • Pre-Chapter with the Under Ten of Latin America (UCLAF): Wednesday, April 15 (11:00 a.m. Argentina time).
  • Pre-Chapter with the Under Ten of Africa: Monday, May 4 (3:00 p.m. Rome time).
  • Pre-Chapter with the Under Ten of Asia (FCAO): Wednesday, May 6 (1:00 p.m. Rome time).
  • Pre-Chapter with the Under Ten of Europe/1 (COTAF, ESC): Friday, May 8 (4:00 PM Rome time).
  • Pre-Chapter with the Under Ten of Europe/2 (CEM, CONAMO, St. Jerome and North Slavic Conferences): Saturday, May 23 (3:00 PM Poland time).
